Folk high schools have been a prominent part of Danish culture for many years. The schools have developed during the years, but their main purpose of cultural enlightning and socialising remains the same.

Living at a Danish Folk high school is an experience for life. It is a wonderful way to meet new people and try new things. All kinds of people choose to go to folk high schools in Denmark. Some people wish to take some time off from their studies or their work and others use it as a bridgebuilder between high school and further education.

Several different folk high schools exist in Denmark and all kinds of interests are covered by these schools. Each school usually have one main focus – being anything from dance, creativity, literature, sports, music, drama, films, media, gymnastics, etc. People are informally educated within the field of interest. You make great friends and create international contacts. A stay at a Danish folk high school is also a great addition to your CV when applying for future jobs.

A high school is a place where you live and study at campus together with your fellow students. Boarding, lodging, tuition fees and school materials are included in the price of the stay. But check out for additional costs, as some courses have additional costs for expencive materials or for study trips. Boarding, lodging and tuition at a Danish folk high school normally cost between  100 and 320 € per week. However, each year the Danish Cirius Foundation supports the education of new EU citizens in Denmark. The regular support is 80 € per week to cover the tuition fee for courses for more than 12 weeks. But the Cirius Foundation also grants full scholarships.  See more about the Cirius Foundation at: http://www.ciriusonline.dk/

Find the folk high schools on www.hojskolerne.dk

There are several other folk high schools in Denmark. Many of them have international students as well. But be aware that some folk high schools in Denmark do not offer any classes or programmes in English. But then again, learning Danish among the Danes will always be the best method.
